I was checking out the keyed whistles over at the Sweetheart Flute Co., when I saw this very interesting entry:
“Adler” Whistles: Great playing maple pennywhistle in D, made by a famous maker of recorders. Sweet tone, nicely crafted. Has been retuned to perfect intonation and range extended to above high D, by Ralph Sweet. Cloth case and cleaning rod are included. Adler Whistle. $60.00
Is the famous Weltmeister/Adler Heinrich/Gael wooden whistle, tweaked by Sweet? Has anybody played this thing? Is the fingering for the Cnat still 0xx xx0? If anybody has one of these Sweetened Adlers, please post a review. I need to know about these things!
PS. Anybody wondered why the Adler needs to be “returned” to perfect intonation? Like, it used to be there, and then went flat, or something?

I have a wooden Adler that I bought back in 2000. The intonation is pretty horrible. I contacted Adler directly because I was appalled that they would even market such a piece of crap. They assured me that my particular model was discontinued due to it’s problems. One has to wonder though why they didn’t do a recall on all these models as well. I probably should have known better as all the Adler recorders I have ever tried were fairly second rate (or worse).
Last week I was told that Ralph Sweet is in cooperation with Adler to help re-designing their wooden whistle. The one I saw looked nice and I think reworked by Ralph they will be better. I do not know though when these models get in the market. Hope this helps Brigitte

Erik, I remember reading that but didn’t remember the thing about the Ralph Sweet tweak. It didn’t sound like yours was one that you got with a Sweet-Tweek?
