Has anybody ever used a small drum sander on the mouthpiece of a Susato?
The chunky mouthpiece is the only real complaint I have about Susatos, and I think it could probably be fixed with a small drum sander.
Then again, It could completely ruin the whistle… that would be my luck.
I just thought I’d run the idea by everyone before I attempted it to see what kind of feedback I got.
Somehow I don’t think I’m the first person to have this idea. ![]()
I don’t know what a drum sander is; however
a friend of mine ground down the lower
lip of the Susato mouthpiece on a grinding
wheel used for shaping hearing aids.
Worked fine, no harm done. And it’s
comfortable that way, too.
Actually I experimented with the other end of the fipple to see how the range of the whistle might be affected. I discovered that the plastic fipple is hollow. Thus, I would not recommend trying to reshape the mouthpiece it for fear it would be totally ruined.
i tweaked the head of my susato low d by reshaping the underside of the mouthpiece on a piece of dowel with sand paper laminated to it. a broom handle does a good job. its more comfortable to play now and it looks ok.
