I’ve just come across a Susato Low D in a brownish colour. I brought it to work with me today and the first person to see it said: “Wow, giant recorder!” Of course, I corrected them, saying the name that I casually use to refer to said instrument-- “whistle”. Their response to this was: “Oh, so it’s not even as good as a recorder…”
The Susato has a decent sound and it really isn’t as hard to play as I thought it would be. However, its most important feature is that it hurts a heck of a lot if you hit someone with it.
Save the whistle, simply pick up any large heavy object and see how that fits thier skull. If they call a low d or any whistle a R… then they dont deserve the whistle…
besides, its hard to clean blood from a whistle, I dont think the paper/soap thing works to keep it out.
I’ve got a middle-eastern cane low D and a Bingamon plastic low D. Both of these are rather heavy and either would pack a solid wallop–more so than the Susato low D I have. And in both cases, the price for the comfort of physical protection is far less than any other low D. The wood whistle may actually improve in tuning and playability with dents and damage caused by a good caning.
