Anyone tried the new keyed Susato whistles?
was wondering if adding the keys really made a big differance
particularly in the low whistles…seems as though it would 
If they’re anything like the keys on low recorders, they are a big help…
I recently sent my Susato Low D wide bore in.
Mr Kellischek installed one key on the Low D. I was extremely impressed by the service. It literally took like three or four days total from mailing it to him to getting it back. (Kansas to North Carolina and back!)
I even suspect he may have just picked up a lower section from his inventory and sent it back the same day. Mine was fairly new so I could not tell.
The key itself is just fine. It is big enough to hit easily yet not be in the way. It has a nice spring action - you lose the sliding efect - but you can “flutter” it quite easily and it responds quickly. The spring is so there is little or no effort, yet springs back immediately.
All in all, if you have a problem hitting the low D on one of these - this works very well. The craftmanship on it is quite good even considering it is a plastic (albeit high quality) constructed whistle and key. The underside is padded and closes the hole EVERY time. That is something my fingers don’t seem to do on the upper holes quite often enough- LOL.
I have since been able to stretch my fingers to playing a Kerry Low D. I really like the Kerry’s sound and the holes are chamfered and large so that it seems my fingers -once stretched- slide in and close the holes easily.
But the Susato is a great choice for those that cannot reach the other conventional Low D’s. Their sound is different from the Kerry which is quite a stretch for the low D hole. The Susato is a more pure sound - the Kerry a haunting sound and a very easy breath control whistle. At 59 YOA, my fingers do feel the reach on the Kerry to say the least!
And I must again honestly commend Susato’s excellent service to me.
