We have a lot of water here–lots of deaths from this. People panic. But, as you can see from this video, you can survive if you just remain calm.
Here’s what you need to break those car windows in an emergency.

Tragically, while undoubtedly rare, this is all so very true. It’s something that most folks don’t think about. I remember up here driving to work everyday several years ago. There was a curve in the road, somewhat in the boonies – but not totally-- and the hedgerow had a large gap in it. I noticed it in the back of my mind, but it wasn’t something that really stood out. It seems there was a woman that had been missing for a couple of days and her family and police didn’t know where she had gone off to. What happened was that her car had gone off the road on the curve, went through the ditch, through the hedgerow, through the fence directly behind the hedgerow, and into the pond that was directly behind the fence. She wasn’t found until the emergency squad pulled her car from the water.

There’s something on this in the Red Cross Basic Water Rescue course. This is NOT a lifeguarding course but rather provides info on self-rescue and non-swimming rescue of others. Unfortunately, there isn’t much interest in such classes.
