I’m doing some research and I wonder if you’all will help
me. I need your responses to a question. There is no
right answer.
You can answer Yes or No.
Here’s the question:
Is the Pope a bachelor?
Thanks!

yes.
The question is rhetorical, like the famous bear who does his business in the woods, right?
Is he not married to God?
Doesn’t that negate his bachelorhood?
The last I heard was that the only thing he liked better than a good conundurum was a good nun under him so I’ll vote…Yes.

Are you asking about The Pope the man or The Pope the office? (I always wanted to ask a smarty question like this as if I knew what I was talking about.
)

We really should ask Gonzo. I’m sure he’ll come up with something doctrinal-du-jour for us.
No, I don’t think he’s married to anybody, not to God.
Nuns are married to God, brides of Christ.
The question isn’t rhetorical.
I need Yes or No responses of a straightforward
nature. This really is research.
Grateful for Yes or No answers. Not a trick question,
not a theological question.
Help appreciated. Thanks.
Jim,
Research into what?

I’ll tell you later. Now might affect the result.
Nothing deep.
You said there was no right answer. If there isn’t any right answer, why are you asking?
There is a technical answer, but that doesn’t seem to be what you’re getting at. Said technical answer is readily available on the net.
But, really, it would never happen, so the question is a moot point.
Okay, then; I’ll be gouge-my-eyes-out dull and say:
Yes.
Well, he’s supposed to be.
No
Simple as that Bro.
By the conditions of his lifetime contract he is celibate and cannot marry, so that would make him, by default, a bachelor.
He might have a Masters degree stashed away somewhere but that makes it a trick question ![]()

Yes
Yes.
Point taken; but, I still vote ‘no’. The concept of ‘bachelor’ seems to imply someone not yet married. He’s definately out of the running.
I intend to follow my fathers example and be a bachelor all my life ![]()

Thanks. Here’s why I’m asking. The question is whether
‘bachelor’ and ‘adult unmarried man’ are
synomymous. On the face of things
‘bachelor’ just means ‘adult unmarried man.’
But some people balk at saying the Pope, who
is plainly an adult unmarried man, is a ‘bachelor,’
because they think a bachelor is an adult unmarried
man WHO IS SOCIALLY AVAILABLE TO MARRY.
The Pope is not available.
I’m wanting to know how extensive the latter intuition
is. It seems to be a minority intuition, so far here, but a significant
minority.
