Summer songwriting mayhem

Ooops, I meant to post this here in the pub (and not the flute forum). My apologies for the duplicate post…

Each of the past few summers, I have participated in an Internet songwriting workshop. There are plenty of creative types here, and plenty of musical talent as well. This is an open invitation to anyone who wants to participate. There is no cost, though you do need a free Yahoo ID to sign up.

The 50 song challenge:
This is a group whose purpose is to challenge members to write 50 songs in 90 days. Between July 4 and October 1 of any year, in the company of others, you can engage in some harmless songwriting mayhem. The prize is the pride in writing songs that may never have been written otherwise.

Come on and give it a go!

You don’t have to be a songwriter, just have to want to be one. Talent helps, but is not a requirement. The lesson of the workshop is that sticking to a project and working on it over time, will lead to tremendous results for the average person.

I can add that my participations in the group has done more than anything else for my development as a songwriter and as a musician. The curious can hear some of my songs at:

How’s this for a Salvation Army theme song:

Sing Halle-LUUUH-ya
Sing Halle-LUUUH-ya
Put a nickel in the drum
Save another drunken bum
Sing Halle-LUUUH-ya
Sing Halle-LUUUH-ya
Put a nickel in the pail and you’ll be saved.

Sing Halle-LUUUH-ya
Sing Halle-LUUUH-ya
Put a nickel in the pail
Get another piece of tail
Sing Halle-LUUUH-ya
Sing Halle-LUUUH-ya
Put a nickel in the pail and you’ll be saved.

Can they all be to the tune of “The Yelllow Rose of Texas”?

Well thanks to Emm,

Every time I hear “Halle-LUUUH-ya”

I hear DAYO…OH DAYO…

All her fault…forever .

Only if your name is Emily Dickinson

Owing to the use of ballad meter, the lyrics are interchangeable with those of many other songs and poems. An example is many of the poems of Emily Dickinson.

In the group, silly songs are encouraged and fun to write. Each song ideally has its own unique melody and lyrics. Take offs or parodies of existing songs are not encouraged, though a few usually sneak in.

Not bad, though another organization comes to mind when I read those lyrics.

I’m sorry, but you must get in line behind several teenagers and fill out the proper forms in triplicate before your petition to peg me with any sort of lifelong blame will be considered.
