So, have you got any? I’m wondering what options there are if I ever decide to actually go for one. Basically the only requirements are that it be in tune, and that is loud for it’s class. So, any ideas?

I have a Copeland, an Overton and a Bartlett. The Overton is the loudest but needs to be played rather robustly. The Copeland is surprisingly loud—or is it just that the full tone makes it seem loud? It’s also very expensive. The Bartlett is the quietest but has the breath requirements of a high whistle. So, if there’s something louder than an Overton, others will have to advise you on it.
I got an old Chieftain low D that’s pretty loud, louder than my old Bernard Overton low D anyways.

True, the Chieftain may be the loudest, but the Overton is so much better in the fianl analysis.

There’s an outfit selling an India-made non-tunable DD on eBay for $35. I got one to examine, and it’s in tune and quite loud, but with an easy blow. The material is fairly thin nickel-plated brass, very tweakable, and pretty easy to make tunable by any competent whistlesmith or plumber! 
Mine came with a nice velvet bag, shipped inside a container made of Schedule 40 water pipe (!!) Very sturdy shipping container, indeed…

I’d say the tone makes it seem loud. I got to play it in a full session for the first time about a week and a half ago, and I had trouble hearing it at times.
I’ve just spent the last five days with Colin and Brigitte Goldie and had the opportunity to play more of their whistles than I’ve ever seen in my entire life. Overton whistles are absolutely superb - top class all the way! Not only are the whistles superb but Colin and Brigitte are two of the kindest, most generous people I’ve met in my life and they will go above and beyond the call of duty to make you a whistle you will love. Let Colin know you want a really loud whistle and he will make you one heck of loud, honking whistle. Go for an Overton low D. You will be happy you did!

I sort of expected that. It’s just got that beautiful full but warm, even and fuzzy tone all the way up and down. Properly amplified it would sound great in any context though I’m sure. I just love mine.

Which is one reason why many people learn to play the flute: A good Pratten or even Large Hole Rudall style flute will be far louder than almost every Low Whistle.
I do agree with Chris though, Colin can certainly make you blastingly loud Low whistle if you need one to muscle in on your session mates with 
Chris, you lucky Baastad (using the Bahston accent and spelling)…

An 800 watt Peavey amp with a good Shure microphone should work pretty well with just about any low-D

I seem to just keep repeating myself: get an Overton. I don’t play in sessions, but when I’m in a room with good acoustics, my Low D can really kick bum!!!

That’s what we’re all saying; well, most of us. I haven’t been on this board for long but if I got a free Overton every time I said ‘buy one’ I’d have enough to start a shop. Rumours that I do get a free one for evrey plug are grossly exaggerated (unfortunately).
