Although I grew up 30 miles north of NYC, I haven’t just gone down there to hang out and do fun things in a great many years. Since Charlene moved out here 11 years ago, we’ve been down a number of times to do specific things (conferences, family events) but always left right afterwards.
This coming weekend is the anniversary of our first face to face meeting and we’re finally going to The Big Apple to play. Alas, I’ve lost track of good places to go, eat, etc.
We’re planning on the Museum of Modern Art, and that will probably be enough museum for one trip.
Any suggestions for good, unusual, reasonably priced restaurants? Other attractions? We’re thinking maybe The Intrepid Museum, Central Park if we get a nice day, but we’re open to suggestion.
That much I remember. NY Pizza is cut radially, making wedge shaped slices. When I moved Upstate, I was taken aback to see pizza made in square pans, cut into square “pieces”. More recently, we’re seeing more NY style slices, which is a relief. That first bite, from the tip, is sublime
We ended up having a great Thai dinner right next door to our hotel and a Brazilian dinner the next night only a block away. We also saw two shows and visited the Museum Of Modern Art. All in all a great time.
Good grief. The only time I’ve seen pizza
cut into quadrilaterals was that crappy
elementary school cafeteria stuff.
I’m late to the game, but there’s a great
pseudo-Russian restaurant near Times Sq.
call the Firebird. They have some very nice
Prix Fixe dinners. The salmon bisque was
incredible.
We saw La Cage Au Folles, with Kelsey Grammer and Fela!
We’re big fans of La Cage ever since our wonderful regional theatre did it a few years back. Kelsey Grammer was good-- sort of a fey Frasier. I gotta say though that our local company’s production stood up VERY well against “real” Broadway.
Fela! was fantastic. It was recommended to us by our friend who is the drummer in the aforementioned local theatre company (http://www.cohoesmusichall.com/). It’s the story of Fela Kuti (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fela_Kuti), a Nigerian musician and political activist. The music and dancing were really fantastic and Fela’s story was eye opening. If you’re planning on being in NY, this show is definitely worth seeing.
