stuck tuning slide - FIXED WOOHOO!

My brass Copeland low F doesn’t want to come apart. My instinct is to spray it up with some wd40 but I’m not sure if that’s the best way to unstuck her. Anyone know the right thing to do in these cases?

Also, I’m guess it’s a good idea to give the pieces a bit of a cleaning and some oil after I get them apart. Is bore oil okay to use for that, or do I need to get something else?

Tuning slide issues

Thanks for the link, Denny. There’s good stuff there for preventing the problem from reoccurring, but I didn’t see anything there about how to get unstuck (unless I missed it somehow).

oh, fine :tomato:

You can try the WD40 - it won’t hurt the brass, but try to keep it out of the mouth piece. I’ve seen Copeland whistles get seriously distorted trying to wrench them apart, so that’s ill-advised too. You could, if you feel cmfortable with this, wrap the mouthpiece with a cold, wet cloth or towel, and try applying heat to the female part of the joint only with a small propane torch (not mapp gas - too hot). That should expand the female part to allow you to get them apart. Be careful not to heat the joint too long, as it is soldered to the body at the bottom end. Running the joint briefly under scalding water may also work if you are lucky.

Thanks for the help guys. The hot water did the trick. It took a few minutes and I may have pulled my shoulder out of its socket, but the whistle came apart. I’m gonna go clean up the joint now.
Thanks again!

As I was cleaning the connecting pieces I realized that I’d never had them apart before. I haven’t had the whistle all that long …just a few months. When I put it back together, I checked the bell note against a keyboard and found the body didn’t have to be jammed up to the head anywhere near as much as it had been.
