STRATHSPEY IN MAY 2006

http://www.strathspeyinmay.com

This year’s festival kicks off on Thurs 27th so I thought I’d put up a post about it.
Info is on the website, but on Saturday there is an informal uilleann piping tionol from 11am at the local Health Centre, and a piping recital at 630pm.
This year David Munro, who plays uilleann pipes for “Setanta” is playing. he has an old C set [maker not known] and a D set with chanter of his own making.

The rest of the recital will include warpipes, ??gaida [Bulgarian/Eastern European pipes of some sort] and :astonished: :astonished: a young lass playing electric pipes.

There will be a bit of a session after, probably in the Craig Bar.

Not a high profile festival this year, as we’ve aimed to get the locals into it a bit more…but there’s some diddlydee on the Friday evening 9pm Ben Mhor Hotel when Breabach are in concert.

“gaita” is a spanish pipe

The guy who plays them has sometimes said they were Bulgarian pipes, sometimes said they were a type of “gaida” [his words].

I might find out some more from him after I see him tonight…he’s playing in a piping recital in Inverness that I’m also playing in tonight.

Gaida is Bulgarian and Gaita is Spanish. Interesting similarity in names.

Thankyou…thats what the man said…gaida and gaita are not the same…one Spanish, one Eastern European
