The pistõn sounds beautiful. A bit similar to the baroque oboe, but with a slightly honkier sound (though that may have more to do with the playing technique). Youenn Le Bihan plays them in the band Skolvan (fantastic band, by the way…worth checking out) and Jean-Michel Veillon has played them from time to time in Kornog and other bands.

The season I played with a bagad we used a pistoñ in the opening tune of our competition suite. It was a pretty awesome, thunderous sound.
