It has been 25 years since my favourite Canadian songwriter - Stan Rogers, died (2nd June 1983). So tonight I sang Barratt’s Privateers at my local folk club in rememberance.
I had a look too see if there was any vids of him singing Barratt’s Privateers or Lies on line and found this documentary.
A classic songwriter. Last week I was pleased to hear my daughter’s high school choir sing Watching the Apples Grow. Neat music. The best part of that particular song is thumbing our noses at Ontario! A national pastime.
Jef
It’s early up Ontario farm, Chicken crow for day
I wish I grew Annapolis apples up above Fundy Bay
Oh it seems so far away
On the ridge above Acadia’s town to the valley down below
The evening shadow falls upon the families listening to the radio
And watching the apples grow.
(CHORUS)
Down on the farm, back among the family, away from Ontario
Hear the ladies singing to the men, dancing it heel and toe
And watching the apples grow.
Ontario, y’know I’ve seen a place I’d rather be
Your scummy lakes and the City of Toronto don’t do a damn thing for me
I’d rather live by the sea.
I’ve watched the V’s of geese go by, the foxfoot in the snow
I’ve climbed the ridge of Gaspereaux Mt., looking to the valley below
And watching the apples grow.
Nice find, Davy. The only thing I ever really objected to with all the hoop-la over Stan Rogers was making out that he invented that type of folk song when there was, in fact, a long history of those type of songs in the Maritime provinces. Stan borrowed frequently from them and made them his own.
Stan was from beautiful Hamilton, Ontario - Paris by the Bay!

If you listen to his From the Family record, he says pretty bluntly who his antecedants are.
