Stage Mic/Amplification for whistling

Any recommendations for a decent mic/amp combo to deliver the best sound from a whistle on stage? Would really appreciate some advice - currently playing through a vocal mic into a guitar amp, which not surprisingly really doesn’t sound that wonderful!

Welcome to the board! This was one of my first questions too. Michael Eskin was kind enough to write me back with his suggestions, and I learned more by searching under “amp” and “mic” in the “topic” category. For example (quote):

Dear Friends,

I have been playing whistles and amplifying them for a lot of years. I won’t say that my way is the best, but here is what I do. I have a dynamic Audio Technika that has an on/off switch (important)which travels into two effects boxes, both made by Roland. The first is a Boss BASS EQ. I use this to knock up the low frequencies of the low whistles and the very low notes on even the high ones. Anything above 1,000 hz is passed and unaffected. Also, this box has a preamp to deal with underpowered mixers. Then, this box is hooked to a Boss Digital Delay/Reverb. This is excellent because if I need to speak or sing into the mic, then I can cancel the reverb by simply stepping on the pedal. (Since human voice is mostly above 1,000 hz, I do not bother with cancelling the Bass EQ.) Then, the signal goes to the mixer or amp head with all EQ and reverb obviously run flat. I cannot say who I learned this from, but I can tell you that this person is often mentioned as one of the great whistle players on this message board. (Bob Pegritz)

So there’s one opinion. I hope you come up with something that works well for you.

Good luck,

Cara

Hi Cara, thanks for your welcome! I did actually spend some time searching the forum before posting my message, and hadn’t really managed to find anything useful. I certainly hadn’t found that one you copied! Using the keywords within that I have now been able to find some other useful postings, which are definitely helping paint a better picture.

Nevertheless, I’d still appreciate comments or suggestions from anyone else - particularly with regard to specific amps or mics they have found work well.

Happy whistling

Bill
