Stack of Wheat or Barley?

For the NPU Vol.I instructional video the booklet lists a tune as “The Stack of Wheat” but Nollaigh introduces it on the video as “The Stack of Barley”. I believe there is indeed a tune by each of these names, but which is actually played in the video? Or are they indeed one and the same tune with interchangeable names? Not that that happens much with Irish tunes!

I don’t know the video but there are a Stack of Barley and a Stack of Wheat, which are different tunes. In addtion Junior Crehan composed Stack of Rye and Stack of Oats t omake up a quartet.

The one on the NPU video is “The Stack of Wheat.” I first learned it from Frankie Gavin’s recording…I think it’s “Omos do Joe Cooley?”

Thanks Justine. I thought it was “Stack of Wheat” until I began listening to the tape to learn it and heard Nollaigh say it was Barley!

Kevin Crehan plays the quartet on his excellent CD.

I think at least one of the Junior Crehan compositions is on the concertina.net tune list.

How about The Stack of Flapjacks? I haven’t been able to find a mix for buckwheat pancakes in ages. Or how about:

Oats and beans and barley grows
As you and I and everyone knows.
Oats and beans and barley grows
As you and I and everyone knows.
Waiting for a partner.
etc.

Regarding Kevin Crehan. I’ve been after him for a good while now to do a reprint of his CD. It’s one I’d love to own but can’t trace a copy. This probably isn’t something Kevin himself would endorse but you never know if you never ask… if anyone out there would like to help fund the reprint of his CD let me know and I’ll get you in touch with him.
