I’m making a square chanter according to the instructions on Craig Fischer’s web page. I am also new to piping. I’d like to know about anyone else’s experiences in making one of these square chanters (are they do-able, any good etc).

Not to dissuade you from your project, but I had much better luck building a penny chanter than I did with the square chanter. Your results may vary. I firmly believe the laws of the physical universe change from workshop to workshop; therefor your square chanter may be just the ticket. Please prove me wrong as I would hate to be just another nay-sayer. The very best of luck to you.

i found it worked really well-i take my hat off to craig! the ability to take the lid off is just so cool too-makes tuning so easy. i’m really happy with it-it’s in tune(at concert pitch!) i can get to high c with it and the sound’s fab 
i do have some piccies, and will put them up when i’ve got some more time-best of luck with it -hope u enjoy the process as much as i did
Thanks for the encouragement! I probably will do the penny chanter eventually, but I like working with wood, so I’ll try the square chanter first. I’ve sent away for David Dayes’ booklet on building a practice set also, to fill in the details on bellows, bags etc. I have yet to lay eyes (in person) or hands on a “real” chanter, up close. I hope to do so soon. Pics of your square chanter would be great.
