Anybody going to the Highland Games at Springfield this next Saturday? Seems like a quarter of the town is of Irish descent, but the Scots are the only ones who do much about heritage.
I wish I could go to the games. I have many friends performing there and many more going that way.
I have been meaning to ask you exactly where Tallula Illinois is. Are you close enough to Bloomington to come over for a session?
I plan on going to Springfield for the festivities. I am in the Alton, Il area.

Tallula is about 20 miles NW of Springfield. Bloomington is about 60 miles by air but an hour and 20 minutes by minor highways. I know about the Bloomington and Champaign sessions and theoretically I am close enough. Practically, however, at least in my opinion, I’m nowhere near good enough.
Since I’m still having some mobility problems, I’ll probably be found mostly in or near the bleachers watching the pipe competition. If anyone makes it, I should be easy enough to find. How many others will be there with a festival t-shirt, blackthorn walking stick and border terrier?
How is it that I have lived withing a 30 minute drive of Tallula for most of my life and have never heard of it? I should really pay more attention when I am driving. Too much practicing going on.
Alton you say. I heard that Larry Nugent is doing a stint down at McGirks in St. Louis.
Chuck, If you know even one half of one half of a tune you will fit right in.
Hi Chuck,
I agree with tunemarshall, you should come up for a session on a Monday night at Lucca Grill (in downtown Bloomington)! It’s a great group of people - no one there is the least bit judgmental of playing abilities (which is very good for me).
I’m going to try to make it down to Springfield for the games. If I do, I’ll look for you.
Thom
Blackhtorn Walking Stick!
I know a tune about that. You have to come so we can play in honor of your walking stick!
'Tisn’t like you’d have had cause to remark it. Tallula claims a population of 700, but they’re exaggerating badly. Like most small towns, it’s mostly older folk, the young seldom bother to come back after the service or college. Sad to say, it’s still the 4th largest town in Menard County, which still has roughly the same population as it did during the Civil War.
I’ll most certainly be there - haven’t missed one since the first one back in 1994. If anyone needs directions, e-mail me.
Yes…Nugent has been doing an ongoing stint at McGurks…TIS great. He was also one of the teachers at the TIONAL recently. From the times you guys put on those distances I can tell that I have been driving WAY to quick. I travel all over Illinois with my job so I get around quite a bit. Geez I think of Bloomington as just a hop skip and a jump from Springfield.
