13/20. I looked at their eyes too.
17 out of 20.
I also looked at their post-smile expression. People who genuinely smile don’t generally go to a “non-smile” instantly. What ever emotional gizmo caused the smile usually has to wear off.
Unless you step on their toe while they are smiling.
13/20. You can tell this is a British site, the people are so ugly. Several smiles I had to watch from behind the sofa.
When I was over there I thought the women were, on an average, more attractive then here in Michigan. Hmm.
I don’t think you were looking at their faces, Fly.

Ahem…ah…well…
Crikey - I’ll think I’ll stay here on the other side of Loch Michigan then !!!

13/20. That just about matched my prior confidence in my ability to tell. I think I would do better in real life since I’d have more contextual clues.
When I was doing the test I often wasn’t at all confident that I was doing OK although in those cases I was confident about I got nearly all right.
Forced to say what I was going by, I said the eyes but really I think I was less influenced by a single feature than by various gestalt properties of the face as a whole.
Interesting test.
Gosh, I only got 10 of 20. So half the people that smile at me don’t really mean it. Oh dear. I wonder which half?
18 out of 20. I’m not surprised. I usually know when someone is trying to manipulate me.
But didn’t you misjudge any genuine smiles as fake?
I got 17/20, which is much better than I expected. I misjudged one as genuine and two as fake, but I think I mismarked one of those. (With my memory, it’s hard to be sure.)
Here is the original article.
According to this research, men are better at recognising fake smiles than women.

15/20, i checked the eyes.
Hmmm, good point. I did. Duh! So then 1/4 of the people smiling at me I am thinking are meaner than they are, and 1/4 of them I am thinking are nicer than they are. This is going to make life complicated.
Shoot first; ask questions later. ![]()

14/20, eyes.
Has anyone considered the idea that they’re all fake? I mean, really. Someone points a camera at you and says, “Now, smile”. Think about it.
I spotted this one straight away. Tis no smile, tis a leer!
