Oh, goody! Let’s stick pins in it! :smiling_imp:

[Madeleine Kahn accent] "Oh wheely…:really: " [/accent]

We report on the discovery of a double nucleus in M 83, based on measurements of the line of sight velocity distribution of stars observed at near infrared wavelengths with the VLT ISAAC spectrograph. We observe > two peaks > separated by 2\farcs 7 in the velocity dispersion profile of light from late-type stars measured along a slit 0\farcs 6 wide, centered on the peak of K band emission and with P.A. 51.7°. The first peak coincides with the peak of the K band light distribution, widely assumed to be the galaxy nucleus. > The second peak, of almost equal strength> , almost coincides with the center of symmetry of the outer isophotes of the galaxy.

isophotes

Now that is a cool word.

From Thermodynamics:

ISO lines (also Isarithmen called) are lines, which interconnect neighbouring points of same characteristics or values of a certain size particularly on maps as for example air pressure, depth of water etc. Here it concerns particularly contours to the ISO lines to the rendition of geophysical, meteorological and hydrologic data and lines of a constant size in usually thermodynamic diagrams.

Isoluxe = Lines of same brightness, also Isophote.

Most of this sort of stuff is available in German only on der veb.

Ah yes! The good Herr Dr. Onderveb! Isn’t he a PhD from the University of Munich?

Isophotes of the Galaxy

I think that would be a good name for a rock group. (A New age rock group.)
