Spend my money!!!

I am making a very difficult decision on how to spend birthday money. How would you spend $50 dollars on whistles?

I currently own:
-a mutilated sweettone (still plays, head is warped and discolored from an unsuccessful decapitation),
-a (red and shiny) howard low D,
-a plastic fife,
-a feadog (which I like a lot but badly needs a good cleaning…and I am afraid to try and remove the head because if I botch it as badly as my first attempt I will no longer have a normal high d.)

Right now I’m looking for cheap whistles I can have fun messing around with, without fear that I will end up with nothing I can play. I’m thinking I want a clark, another feadog, and maybe a generation? If I stay with the cheap ones I could probably buy one more…

Or should I a single slightly more expensive one?

…life is tough, isn’t it?

I personally don´t see a point in having too many whistles. Good, balanced, while still rather cheap whistle is Dixon Trad. In my opinion, it´s not nearly as good as some other brands, but those are way above your limit.

With 50 dollars you could buy:

  • A Dixon Trad high D OR a Susato Dublin high D
  • A Generation high D
  • A Generation Bb

All 3 for less than u$s 50 (excluding shipping that may cost you a few dollars)

It’d be a nice purchase IMHO.

A Freeman-tweaked Mello-Dog C/D set comes in at around that number. You won’t need to make improvements to this set.

…Truth be told I kind of want to play around with “improving,” which is why I’m torn between getting a mid-range whistle, or a few more cheapies so I can mess around without ending up whistle-less!

A clare is a little more expensive than a feadog or generation, but plays much better standard. You could still mess around with it, and it wouldn’t be to huge of a loss if you messed it up.

If I had $50 to spend on whistles I’d probably get another Dixon. I love my polymer D…such a good ole standby whistle. I might get another key or two. But that’s just me.

I’d vote for a Clarke original and a Clare. I like the tone of the Clarke and you can tweak away at without doing anything you can’t undo. The Clare’s a good, inexpensive whistle that makes a good addition to the collection.

Sent you a pm.

Leave the"improving" to the pros, buy yourself an O’Briain Improved D - best bang for the buck in the under $50. range (and it whips the pants off many whistles costing 3X as much.)

Hi Ducky,

Email me your address and I’ll send you some cheapies for free that you can tweak.

Doc’s a class act. He probably would have done that even if you weren’t named after an animal!

Fifty Bucks, huh…Go see Doc Jones at irishflutestore.com and buy either a Freeman Tweaked Generation D BlueTop or a Freeman Tweaked MellowDog…Both great whistles, and so different, I couldn’t advise on one or the other. I play the Gen. Silver Bluetop in the car, and the MellowDog at home…as an attorney, I do not advocate whistle playing while driving…but I do advocate buying whistles from Doc Jones - he’s fair, honest, and really nice. Ha! Good one.

I’ve always had a soft spot for water fowl.

Doc

I have been wondering about these, where do you get them?

I just got a note in my mailbox today that something from the Irish Flute Store is waiting at the post office.

That was fast. Really really fast.

…I don’t think I can stand the suspense.
