My right hand pinky is having a hard time in its prescribed supportive role. It locks up and tries to leave the flute and free-float. When it gets in locking mode, it seems to impede normal fingering for the ring finger as well. I am having an interesting and challenging time trying to figure out its best position.
How hard should I try to develop a classic RH grip? Would it be okay to use my RH thumb as the main support for that hand? Right now I have a keyless flute.
The right hand is a bit of a challenge; also if you use the rt
hand pinky it may create difficulties one day when you
move to a keyed flute–the Eb key will be where you
put the pinky down.
It’s fine to use your rt hand thumb to balance the flute,
if it works; also one can supplement this by using
the rt hand ring finger on the D hole, rather as
one did the pinky.
I’ve recently changed entirely to piper’s grip
on both hands, which has really freed my
rt hand very nicely. There have been a lot
of recent threads on this.
