Space Shuttle assembly pictures

I tried to get into astronomy as a teen, but I was more interested in the
machinery we use to view and travel to space. Someone just sent me a
link to this blog post which shows my kind of space-related photography:

Pictures of the Shuttle Discovery from assembly to launch

For example, here’s the shuttle in the Vertical Assembly Building being
attached to the tank:

Why does it have a saltire on it’s nose?

Sunblock.

I said saltire not solaire!

not

Good question. It looks like a green field with a duct-tape cross, but still
rather Saint Andrews-y. Maybe the Scots are sending a mission to ISS?

How do you pronounce “Saltire”?

..

They’ve renamed it The Scot Shuttle Columbo.

Or you can build your own.

Ye cannie rollerskate through a buffalo herd. The engines are running wild; there’s no
way to get at them. We should reach maximum overload in 15 minutes.

Well, I’m impressed.
I merely tried to assemble 3 L.L.Bean porch rockers this afternoon and it was as disastrous as Apollo 13, but without the salvageability.

One would think that I, who have assembled numerous pieces of furniture and bicycles, installed bathroom tile and hardwood floors, and have a hardware store annex in my basement would be capable, but not this time.

Bean is taking them back. Thanks.

I noticed it shows the sling in the photo, so where is big rubber band?

Somewhere in an old farmers almanac, it had a picture of the first Bulgarian space shuttle. It was a biplane strapped to rocket.

sol-ty-er

Some more nasty pictures of the shuttle in action.
