Southeast Tionol 2008 (edited to correct year)

Thanks to all who ran the show this past weekend - great job Gary on a successful tionol. Classes were good, concert was great - I missed the saturday night session due to being on foot, though I suspect Kieran was responsible for not getting me there (!)

The concert was certainly a highlight, with individual performances from Tommy, John, Kieran and Liz, and then a final set from all of the above. Highlight from that was Tommy blowing out his bass drone in the middle of Col. Frasier (i think it was, though by then who the heck knows) and hecking from across the stage - resulting in Liz losing it, and having to hide behind her fiddle as Tommy nobly carrying on…

My greatest thanks to all, and I hope to have a ride to the session with someone next time, or “no soup for you!”

slainte,

maze

PS Tommy, I owe you a pint.

Yes, thanks to Gary and Tricia and everyone else who worked so hard to put a fantastic tionol together. It was also very nice to meet Pat Sky for the first time (after hearing so many things about him).

You’re welcome all. It was a mighty weekend, glad you guys enjoyed it…sorry John, if you would have called me I could have come picked you up..I walked around the Harp looking for likely suspects and didn’t see you.

I’ve uploaded a few pictures, these from my blackberry. I’ll upload the rest from our camera as soon as it returns home (I suspect Tricia still has it and she’s at dance at the moment).
2008 Tionol

Highlights were Pat Sky making it down out of the hills. The beautiful weather (yeah, no tornados!), the Hogan’s great hosting of the cookout, the B session at their kitchen table. (to quote Jason, “it’s like sitting in a hot tub, so warm and cozy”)
B session

Tommy’s animal sounds and watching Liz try not to hurt herself laughing. Great teaching and great concert performances by all the instructors.

Many thanks to the Harp and the Red Door Playhouse for the use of their facilities.

Special thanks to NPU and Irish Arts Foundation of Atlanta for their generous donations!

So…Next year in Florida?

(edited to add…psst, John the year is now 2008)

Great job Gary. Thanks also to all of the other people who put time in to make it an educational, and enjoyable event. Kieran and Tommy were great teachers, and John and Liz contributed mightily. I’m going to have to get some regulators now so that I can work on Tommy’s “What Happened When the Chicken Crossed the Road” Suite.

Yep… I owe John a beer as well.

Gary, you and all of your volunteers did a fantastic job. It was a great weekend. Tt was a real treat getting to hang out with everyone. That B session was great. Pat’s Kenna chanter is a sight (and sound) to behold.

It was one of the best and thanks to Gary Tricia and all.

Kieran and Tommy are tops!!

Really enjoyed it… Ed

I wish I could’ve been there, maybe next year.

jayz!!! by the look of the “b session” pic, no one held back on desert (have a look at the table!)

Get in mah’ BELLY!

The deserts were no where as sweet as the sound o’ those chanters

Dare I say,
I’ve been to a lot of tionols over the years but I will say, Gary White and Co. put on a brilliant weekend
I can’t say enough!!!

It was a real treat to meet Pat Sky. It was one of those overdue meetings and what a trip …

10 out of 10 to Gary for a savage weekend!!!

Tommy.

P.S. Sorry for my bass drone falling out. How embarassing…

It was great to see all the out-of-towners and the instruction has revitalized my practice time. I feel very fortunate to be on this musical journey with such good people. Thanks again to everyone who made it happen.
