South American Whistling

Does anyone on this board ever play Native South American tunes on their whistles? I’m especially thinking of Andean style music. Are there any online resources for such music? Does anyone have a traditional South American ‘whistle’? I really love this style of music (though I’m not South American) and would enjoy getting more into it.

At the risk of seeming to self-promote, (a thoroughly unpleasant business),
I have recorded an album of Andean tunes on the whistle. You can download any or or all of it (or none of it) from my website.
The Andean version of the whistle is the Pinkillo. Difficult to find a good one.
Whistles do the same job much better. Quenas, on the other hand, are a different story!!

Hey Gallant, The Chief is as close to an ancient Inca as anyone these days gets. I have no idea how he manages to still be alive wot with all he knows about this stuff he must be at least 200 years older than his hair - Ignore his modesty - this man is the best english speaking source one can appropriate anywhere on the planet.

Edited to say - there might be better, but you must be willing to resurect bones for that - and the incas were famous for home-trepanning and you never know what you might get!

Do you know where one can find such an instrument? I´ve been looking for a decent quena too!

Seconded.

You could try here.

I got a good ebony/bone quena from Ivan Alandres on this site.
He seems to have returned to charango making and left the quena making to Juan Acha, who is also good.
Can’t help you with Pinkillos.
You can also try Camac quenas. They’re French and I don’t think they have a website but they’re very good. Maybe you can track them down.

Here’s another one.

Can’t personally vouch for this but it looks promising. The ones that say “Ebano Professional Quena” look, to me, like Alandres.
