Hi!
An idea just struck me. As most of you are aware of, the whistle market is not so large outside the UK and certain parts in the US.
At least music shops in my country does suffer from not selling low whistles. They do carry a small amount of cheap whistles though (feadogs and generations).
The general interest for irish traditional music is not so overwhelming over here, and I guess that is why the music shops does not import them.
Simply because they lack customers in that particular field.
This is why I want to make a thread like this one.
So that people who does not have an opportunity to try out multiple instruments before buying, can get an idea of what a low whistle sounds like, before they eventually make a purchase.
I know there are quite a handful of videos on youtube and similar sites, but I think it would be great to have a thread with an overview of what the market truly has to offer.
Text reviews are helpful, but not as helpful as a sound clip presenting the low whistle itself.
There are however precautions to take.
The soundclips that are posted should be of raw material. Reverb, delay and similar effects should not be allowed,
as they clearly can cloud the sound which is originally produced by the whistle.
To play in a room with great natural acoustics should be ok. It is digital tampering that goes against the rules.
I also advice the people who post the clips to be aware of their recording equipment. So that they can bring the whistle they present to justice.
I was thinking of posting soundclips where the two octaves are presented in the first clip, running up and down the scale.
In the second clip we should choose a jig or reel, that every whistler who is presenting must perform. This can be decided if I get enough feedback on this,
so that I know I am not the only person here wanting such a thread. After these two steps have been filled, you can add clips of whatever songs you want to present.
But those two fields are a minimum.
When you post a clip it should look similar to this example:
(Picture)
Brand/key: Overton Low F
Raw recording:
-Scales: [Link to the recording]
-Morrison´s jig: [Link to the recording]
-(Other recordings): [Link to the recording]
Microphone: Shure SM58
This is an example of what it might look:

etc.
If I had decent recording equipment I would start the thread right now, but as the case is that I dont have decent equipment yet, I leave this task to you.
The clip and information you post will be pasted in the first thread which will be updated as new clips are added. That is, if there is no time limit on the edit function.
Even so, if that is the case, the admins should be able to take care of this.
I am awaiting feedback on this. The reason for me doing this, is simply because I have never seen a proper collection of soundclips to map all the whistle´s sound specters.
And I think a library for this would make things easier for many people who are new to the whistle world.
So get your whistle ready and help me complete the library.
