Songs for the Sea?

Hey, Everyone!
Before I start my question, I want to tell you how grateful I am for you all on the Chiffboard. I have learned so much here. The other day I checked out Jerry Freeman’s E bay site and listened to the sound clip of The Humors of Tuaimgreine. I loved it so much I sent to the Session and got the notes. Now I’m PLAYING it! Is that cool or what?

Now my question: We have Bible school coming up (teaching kids about Jesus) and the theme this year is sailing the open seas. I thought if I could learn a coupla sea ditties or hornpipes, that would be cool. More than two, I probably couldn’t manage. Anybody know where I could find them?

Hi riverman

There is the obvious reply to that request - Out on the Ocean
or Ships in Full Sail
or 3 Sea Captains

Shanties
South Australia
Whip Jamboree
Paddy Lay Back
Rolling Home
Santy Anno

Cows have ditties. People have tunes.

I concur with the suggestions above.

Here is a fun one, especially for folks of a certain age:

This is a pretty, and slow, tune. The link is a graphic of the original score with lyrics. The D version, I transcribed into ABC from the graphic (to MT and the rest: cleared in hot on my transcription). I used Jens Wollschläger’s ABC-Transposer to transpose it up to G, which I think sounds better.

So that’s why the calves were all singing this morning!

This one is me favorite. I l’arned it as a kid in me awld country school.

I believe the polite term is “udders”

cow has a head,
cow has an udder,
cow has teats.

I’s got no idea about the ditties.
Really, they don’t sing that well.

No connection to this thread … Funny, I’ve been trying to remember this song for a week now, and it was driving me crazy. Bits and pieces in my head, but not enough to pin it down. It’s the Cathie Ryan recording I was after. Thanks, walrii!

Wow, you guys are GREAT!!
I will pursue all these ideas immediately!!

Whew! Squidgirl! I’m glad you warned me! But I got a couple of possibilities from here! (Of course I have to learn “Blow the Man Down!”)

“out in the ocean” and “ships in full sail” ------- nice ones
Paddy Fahy’s is a nice one too

I always liked The Friendly Visit. It’s a fun one to play. The one at The Session is a bit different, so if you’d like I can e-mail you the dots.
