Somewhat OT: Copyright law under adjustment

Instructive. Thanks for posting, you just undid the day I had when getting Ireland trip tips from Peter in Clare. Yikes! You can get sued (sewed ?) for reading a poet of the 30’s publicly–like in your classroom–with this kind of HS.

Pityt I did not become a movie mogul when I hadn’t a chance. Decided to be a phothog’ instead. The old “better striking it rich in Calcutta rather than Hollywood” syndrome.

Wonder what can happen if you

someone influent’s BBS post 70 years down the pipedrain…

Let’s be positive : the good part is it can prevent some “litterates” to have more quotes than thoughts in their scribblings.

The Sonny Bono copyright act certainly caused me some consternation, when I could no longer count on anything reaching the 75 year mark and entering the public domain.

Yeah, it is the retroactive thing that really bothers me. Obviously Hollywood and other media businesses want to control intellectual property as long as possible (since that is how they make their money) but if they can retroactively extend copy right, then they might as well make it perpetual.

The sad part is that so much of the best elements of our artistic and cultural heritage comes from works that are derivative of works what were in the public domain, not just Traditional Music, but also Shakespeare, many of Disney’s best films, etc.

Bill

Just another example of human greed. I don’t find it surprising in the least.

I hope they choke on their money.

The Supremes ruled that a parody is not a copyright violation. That’s how a RAP version of “Pretty Woman” got away with not paying royalties.

So, if you read copyrighted material in public, just wear a clown nose or a fake mustache.
