Someone I've known for years turns out to be...

…the nephew of a famous whistle maker! I know him through the School of Music at the university where I work. He’s a bass player in the Kalamazoo Symphony, and he runs a concert series. We got together at a coffee joint yesterday to discuss the concert series, and he mentions he’s learning to play whistle. His whistle was made by his uncle, John Sindt! I start choking on my oolong tea.

We go back to his house and I get to play a Sindt whistle for the first time. It had a very pure sound, great high register, and I would certainly class it as a “performance” whistle. There are no sessions in my area so I wouldn’t know how it would hold up against a wall of sound, but I think it would sound great amplified.

All in all, an enlightening afternoon! I was beside myself with serendipity.

Hmmm, now can you try to date him or something, and eventually marry him, so that we can all have access to Sindt’s workshop?

He’s married, so I guess I’ll just have to resort to blackmail of some kind.
