Solve my mystery -What model Burke do I have ?

Hi all… I bought a used Burke whistle a while back, says D-Alpro with a date of 4/2001. I’m trying to figure out if this is the narrow bore or not. Internal bore seems to measure close to .5 inch maybe a bit under (about 12mm), , hard to be exact with a ruler… whistle plays moderate volume. I like the whistle a lot and want to get another, but would like to be sure if this one is the narrow bore or session before I order. Anyone have a surefire way to tell ? Thanks for any help… Tod

I can’t be certain, as my Burke D is composite, but the bore diameter seems about the same as mine. (Narrow)

That looks like the same size as my DAN (D Aluminum Narrow), which I measure as just over 7/16", or about 11.5 mm–hard to be accurate with a ruler.

I have a session pro and the inside diameter is 0.5 inches. I can easily slide an Oak or Generation barrel into the end of it.

Hmmm, conflicting results. Interesting. I remeasured and I’m right. I used a regular ruler and could be off a 64th.

Mine’s brass if that makes a difference.

I don’t have my Burkes in front of me to double-check, but aren’t they engraved “NB” or something if they’re narrow bore? If so, yours isn’t.

Maybe someone else can confirm before I check my whistles later today.

Right. On the back of the fipple, my Burke Narrow Bore Composite is engraved, “D-NBC MB 04/2003.” It’s kind of hard to see, and I wasn’t even aware it was there till just now. Tod, hope this helps.

Thanks to all who responded… I got a quick email back from Mike Burke saying that all narrow bores had NB or DAN written on them… so mine’s a session model - is there much difference in volume or air requirements for those of you who have tried both ?

Yes, there is a noticeable difference. With the brass NB it seems like you can make it sing forever without taking a breath, yet it is very stable in both octaves. The aluminum NB seems to prefer a more aggressive playing style and will accept a bit more air without complaint. Yet either NB requires less air than the Session Pro.
