The Irish Flute Player’s Handbook.
S.C. “Hammy” Hamilton
This is the best book ever published on playing traditional Irish music on the wooden flute. It will be a delight to an accomplished player as much as to a beginner and would make a wonderful present. It is a complete traditional flute player’s source book with 215 pages. It contains illustrated sections on history and development, the flute in Ireland, a tutor section introducing the reader to playing the flute in the Irish tradition, repair and maintenance, and manufacture. It is illustrated throughout with antique and contemporary photos and drawings of flutes, flute making tools, and flute players.
There are also extensive appendices with a bibliography, an exceptionally detailed discography listing all flute recordings, including individual tracks, specially compiled for the book by Nicholas Carolan of the Traditional Music Archive, a key to identify old flutes, a list of flute makers, and lots more!
Hammy Hamilton is a master flute-maker living in County Cork. He is one of the first of the modern Irish flute makers and to this day remains one of the most sought after. He has a two year wait list for a keyed flute. He is also a brilliant flute player and can be heard on several recordings.
This book has been long out of print. It is the first edition and it is very difficult to find a copy. This book is in good condition. One page is loose from the binding but the binding is not cracked and the pages are neither creased nor worn. The book has been treated very carefully its whole life. It comes with the original small LP of twenty tracks.
The Irish Flute Player’s Hand Book contains a wealth of information. It has been referred to in reviews as “Probably the best technical book written on the flute within Irish traditional music, with a useful section on repairs and construction.” A second edition has been promised for years but is still a ways off. You may never get another chance to buy this book.
Buyer will pay for postage from Ireland (about $5).
