quick question… if a whistle player wants to play with a smallpipes player with pipes in A and a fiddler, what key whistle would they need? assuming they are all playing the same standard sheet music

A D whistle will work though not all pipe tunes are whistle friendly.
yup I’d say D whistle is best bet. You could get an A but you’d have to play it up the octave so you could go down to low G and it might make the whistle a bit loud in comparison to the pipes.
A D is what I used on our album with pipes, fiddle and guitar.
