Here is a web site for a sailor I’ve been reading. http://thesimplesailor.com/index.html
Lots of stuff I find fascinating, small boats, twin keels, high latitudes, low budgets, junk rigs, Jordan drogues.
If you like his articles, his books are even better.
Think Tristan Jones without the fiction.
If you like that site here is another. http://www.microcruising.com/famoussmallboats.htm
Some of the voyagers have their books free to read by links.
Shane Actons ‘Shrimpy’ is a favorite of mine.
Enjoy!
For a while I toyed with the idea of making a clinker or lapstrake boat, unfortunately not having constant exposure to water makes the things impractical, but I still end looking at some of the plans on woodenboat store.
Really a kayak or solo canoe made of something bomb proof like Royalex seems to be more suitable to what we would be likely to paddle.
Had to bail out on our memorial day weekend plans, the Namekagon and St Croix River and went from a trickling class I run to class II-III and near flood conditions the two days before the three day weekend.
Those are both some beautiful rivers. A small wood drift boat would be usable on either of them, I know a number of folks in both Wisconsin and Minnesota who try to run those rivers every year/week/day during the season. Even a wood stripper canoe with about three coats of graphite epoxy on the bottom over fiberglass would be a good durable choice. A drift boat type dory(canyon dories) with bulkheads and watertight compartments can make a great weekend overnighter(or much longer) for hauling a ton of gear.
We spent about 3 days on those rivers in our 16’ canoe but have spent a week in our canoe, a dory would be over kill for us. Clcboats.com has some things my wife would like to build, but that will probably be a smaller boat and years down the road.
