small boast

I went to Charlottesville this past weekend to run in the 10-Miler. I had run it a few times, the last, I think, in 1987. I ran it in about the same time I did 20 years ago (83 and change, about an 8:25 pace). Made me feel pretty young. Until. . .

I stopped at a grocery store for beer and GOT CARDED. I’ve been drinking legally for 29 years.

Talk about a great day!

..

Nah, it was up in Orange. After the trip to Horton Winery, where they didn’t have a problem with young ol’ me. Of course the six-year-old daughter and the possibility that they recognized us may have had something to do with it (wishful thinking).

For anyone within striking distance, Horton is a wonderful place. They grow 20-30 different types of grapes on site, including many you’ll seldom encounter elsewhere. I have no idea why they don’t get the press that other Virginia wineries get.

Maybe because Horton (the man, that is) has been pretty outspoken, a few years ago, about how you can’t make much money in vineyards/winery in VA. Probably didn’t endear him to the powers that be…

..

Look. You’d just been running. You looked like a sweaty shlub and a bum. I’d card you, too.
