Ashokan Farewell is lovely. It’s even better on an A Played in D position) than a D.
Doc
Nicely done Brad, pleasant in the morning.
A tune I have been messing with is the theme from an old James Dean film “East of Eden”. It has a strong melody line, all in and about the range of simple system flutes, and can be adapted a thousand ways. I play it on Boehm system so I use the top octave a bit for fun but it’s not needed really, I’ll post it on my web site when I get the Fred Rose wood flute, hopefully sometime soon.
Yes, wonderfully played, Brad.
Another tune is Gershwin
Someone to watch over me.
Let me say that there is a special joy in playing tunes like
My Funny Valentine
and Someone to watch over me
on a Bb flute. The sonorous deep
pitch really can convey romantic passion.
Titanic and Lord of the Rings have pieces that a lot of people have learned by ear.
I can also suggest, The Water is Wide, the church tune, and a Bach Contata that adapts well to whistle.
Hi there. Bradhurley, that’s a lovely tune, and the flute sounds wonderful!
Here’s just a few Welsh ones:
Morfa’r Frenhines
Morfa Rhuddlan (in C, but it works fine on a D whistle or pipes if you work it out)
Ffarwel i Aberystwyth
All the above are on www.welshtraditionalmusic.com , I think. It might be worth you having a look at the ‘Tunes’ section of that site - there’s a lot of good stuff there, much of which may be unfamiliar as Welsh music doesn’t have the same profile as Irish and Scottish stuff ![]()
And what about the Skye Boat Song, too?
