The thinner flute should not be any more likely to crack. The only problem could be if the wood is too thin at the joints, especially the socket part. This can be avoided by making the flute thicker at the joints (you are not holding it there anyway) or by using a wide ring. You can see these approaches on the Jon C flute pictured earlier in this topic.

You should also consider a slideless flute. The slide adds weight to the head, plus it’s less prone to cracking. I think my Olwell slideless flute weighs only around 240-250 grams and its balance point is between the first and second tone holes.

no don’t think I wll go for a slideless, the weight isn’t a problem at all…
