On uilleannobsession there are a number of soundfiles in .smil which I can’t open. Can anyone tell me where I can download software to allow me to listen to these files?
Heyyyyy… I think I can answer that question 
You can hear them using Real Player. You might have to download a codec but that’s all automated in Real so you’re laughing in that department.

If you already have Real Player, but also have QuickTime loaded, you may find that these two are competing with each other to serve all sound files, even though QuickTime can’t actually play smil files. I had to totally rip QuickTime out of my system (NOT and easy job) before I could finally get Real Player to run the smil files. I now run into the opposite problem, where Real wants to control QuickTime mov files, but can’t actually run them. The folks at Real tell me I have to reload QuickTime, but allow Real to control the QuickTime executables.
Bit of a war going on between these two, it seems.
