Hi all,
I’m experimenting with brass-bodied drone reeds and I filled my brazing torch-pen thing with Butane gas, as you do, but the bloody stuff won’t ignite. It just keeps blowing the match out. I realise this is the first time I’ve used such a tool, but one would expect the butane to light up. Any reason why? I though maybe there was air inside the torch that needed to be expelled first, but after about 15 minutes of trying, I gave up, read: ran out of matches.

If the gas is escaping too fast, ie: exit or nozzle velocity too high, a flame won’t catch or hold easily if at all. Try turning the thing down a bit and see what happens. then turn up once you have a flame. Sometimes you can also get an air bubble in the works so you’d want to turn it upside down, and drain the valve and chamber completely, then refill.
Thanks Brian, I seem to have got it working now. May have been some air in it. One tenor drone complete as well, but waaaaaayyyyy tooo loud, even for my bright reed…

Hey, ausdag, what kind of reeds are you making. I’ve never needed a torch for my brass and stryrene ones (nor have I gotten a tenor one to be too loud). Just curious.
Hi Wannabe…I’m silver soldering brass ends onto brass tubing then filing the lay over 2/3 of the length. I know you can stop the end with wax and all, but I’ve always wanted to get do things the tricky way, and so far I’m having good success. As for the volume of that reed, I managed to adjust the tongue (cane) and it now plays at a nice mellow volume and tone.
