Slightly OT: Kate Rusby

The English folk singer, Kate Rusby has been around for about 10 years now. But, for some reason, I had never heard her voice (at least not that I could remember) until last night.

I urge you to try and clap your ears on the track ‘Underneath The Stars’ from her new CD of the same name? It is outstanding!

He voice is to die for, and the production values are impeccable. I particularly like the muted cornet (a small trumpet-like instrument used in Brass Bands in the North of England) on that song. That might be because I used to play one, strangely enough, in Brass Bands in the North of England. Perhaps that’s why I like her so much.

I’m just sorry I didn’t get to her sooner. I now have to go out and buy her complete back catalogue (thank God for trade discounts!).

Her Hourglass album is really lovely. I especially like “A Rose in April”, which is her own composition.
Connie Dover is another beautiful voice in the folk/Irtrad vein . . . and, of all places, she hails from the Midwest! I recommend “If Ever I Return” as a good first album from her.

‘Sleepless’ is perhaps my favourite but she’s very consistent. Her solo records are all pretty much out of the same mould but, if you like that sort of thing, she gives you plenty of the sort of thing you like. I like that sort of thing. Plenty of thrills for low whistlers on these records too.

If you ever get to see her live in concert you’ll also find that she has a great sense of humour.
