Slightly OT: Irish Gaelic Pronunciation Guide?

Howdy Y’all,

Playing these tunes with these very cool looking names has become a bit frustrating at times since I know enough about Gaelic spelling to know that I haven’t got a clue about pronunciation.

Epiphinal moment: when I realized that “Mhaonaigh” was pronounced “Weenee”. I’d like to know how to pronounce the names as well as play the notes.

Anyone know of a website that has a guide as to how to sound out Irish?

Thanks,

PC

It’s even more complicated than I thought. This page is long.

I’ve been studying Gaeilge for about 5 months now and it actually does start to make sense after a little while. Here are some good links:

http://www.mooncove.com/gaeilge/scolaire.htm - my Irish teacher’s website, with lots of information.

http://www.flashlang.com/ - simple Irish flash cards with sound clips - online program, non downloadable.

http://www.gaeliccrossings.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=38 - several threads regarding Irish language - there are some more URLs scattered in these. One of them is http://www.standingstones.com/gaelpron.html which is very good in my opinion.

Ádh mór!

I have an Irish friend who came over to visit a couple of years back, so I cheated and got her to read all the gaelic titles in Ireland’s 110 Best Slow Airs into a recorder for me. I keep that minidisc on hand for emergencies!

There’s a decent guide somewhere in this course:

I’ve said it before, I think there must be a group of Irish folks who just sit around drinking Guinness and making up funny ways to spell.

Thank you all and when I get up to it, I’ll post a message entirely with Irish spellings!

are you studying as part of a school course, or with a one-on-one teacher?
