Tonight was nastier than usual.
We often sit on the front porch and I read Bill Bryson out loud, (Currently: Neither Here Nor There,) because Jeff really really likes it…sometimes it gets dark enough that it’s hard to read before I’m getting eaten too much.
But tonight I think my right foot was the entire fiesta. Itch itch itch.
Drinking a little vinegar daily will make you very unappealing to mosquitoes… and any other biting insect that might otherwise like to make a meal of you.
I did the nasty chemical spray thing yesterday afternoon, hitting all the foliage surrounding the house. This stuff is supposedly a residual killer.
Couple of hours later we sat outside for about a half hour and had VERY little skeeter activity. ![]()
Now to see how residual this spray is…
Ahh, better living through chemical poisons ![]()
Update-- it’s been a couple of days since I sprayed the area around the house, including one day which was really rainy (remnants of one of the hurricanes). This morning I sat outside beneath the trees for at least a half hour and had exactly one mosquito try to bite me. ![]()
I’m no big fan of chemicals either. However, I used something like 5 tablespoons of the stuff in a hose-end sprayer, diluted up to about 30 gallons to spray ALL of our shrubberies and lawn, so I don’t think it’ll do us too much harm.
It seems that mosquitoes are repelled by those who regularly consume garlic.
Rural myth?
Maybe.
Not our skeeters.. I LOVE garlic and put lots of it in most of the things I cook.
All the diet stuff acting as repellents is myth. Pine tar soap will work to an extent but sitting around a campfire everyday for a few weeks without bathing works better. Now I don’t know if it actually repels them or it’s just not possible to feel the bite through the grime build-up on your skin. Works for blackflies too. DEET has destroyed the keys on my laptop, casings on binoculars, cameras, camera lens, a steering wheel, sunglasses…
