Size of the Low A

Just recieved a Chieftain Low A and it’s just a little longer than My Generation Bb.

Now, is this a “Low A” or a Soprano A? I ask because I would have thought that the Low a would be just a tad longer than my Chieftain Low D. Or is that one the Low Low A (Bass A)?

Thanks

I don’t recall ever seeing a Soprano A…I think those are for the real wee folk to play.

You have a Low A, which is where most people consider the low whistles to start. A Low-Low A would be about the size of an uncurled tuba (give or take a few feet).

Well,

It lists it on the Hobgoblin site as a Mezzo Soprano A but I was told it is actually a Low A…When looking at the picture gallery on Overton’s site, it shows a guy in camo holding what they call a Low A and that is what I would think is a real Low A , but is that what they call a Bass A? My Chieftain “Low A” is about 15 1/2" .

Actually I see where you put that the size I have is where the Lows start.

Thanks again,

Hi Trad: As said, the A is often called Low A but some have been using “Mezzo-sop” lately which seems odd. The A is the breaking point in the key scheme, because there are both high and low Gs, but nothing higher because it would be so tiny (as stated above).

Its all new territory , the low whislte naming thing.Somebody could get fancy and use soprano, alto tenor and bass I suppose but maybe they would be closer together than other instrument families that use those names.

I just got a Burke A and its the same length as my Cheiftains but a bit fatter in diameter but thinner walled.

They sure are fun!

Thanks again. Just wanted to be sure. What made me think about all of this was a song on a Lunasa CD that’s played on the Low A and it has some notes that cannot be played in that octave on the normal Low A, so it must be a Bass A or somthing. That’s all I can figure. For anyone who cares it’s on “OtherWorld” and I believe it’s 'Heaton Chapel"

Cheers!!
