Sixteenth-notes in jigs

Say you drop the middle-eighth in a jig to take a breath, but then you still play the dropped note, but as a sixteenth along with the third note.

Take Haste To the Wedding:

A | AFA Agf | ede f…

and drop the g for a breath:

A | AFA Azf |ede f…

but then make it

A | AFA Azg/f/ | ede f…

Is that sort of thing stylistically desirable? I don’t think I hear it much, and Conal O’Grada who drops that g to take a breath doesn’t do it. Kinda fun though, but I wonder whether it’s just something you see in O’Neill’s but shouldn’t play that way.

Check out Mary Bergin’s version of Sliabh Russell (FS2) – I’m pretty sure she does exactly that sort of thing at the start to the A part on most of the repeats.
