Sindt Whistles

Yeah, I think almost all of his whistles are going to Ireland, and from what I gather. Might have something to do with the fact that Mary Bergin started playing his whistles also.

Jeez, if I have to go to Ireland to get one, is that so bad? I just want one, well two, a Sindt D&C set new or used.

Next thing to occur will be who posted WTB first list, never mind the closed Sindt list.

What everyone knows, or should know is, you can’t take’em with ya, as I’ve never seen a luggage rack on a hearst yet!

Actually I have! Just the other day in LA. OK, but it was really some kind of goth limo service. Either that, or the funeral home forgot to check the clients before loading them in, because they looked pretty lively in there.

Hearse? I told my wife to dress me in my finest waterfowling parka, tilt my head skyward, stick my favorite duck call in my mouth, and put my beloved 12 gauge smoothbore in my hands, sit me in a boat, and push me out into the marsh just like a Viking.

Cayden

Now that’s funny, are you sure it was a hearse?

And, in the event that funeral hearses do have luggage racks nowadays, well then, don’t pass your whistles on for someone else to enjoy and play, just take’em with ya as they’re that good.

But, if I sniff out a Sindt underground, I’d be inclined to get that “shovel” and dig some dirt.

And I thought you were Irish… ITM? Say what? :really:

Cayden, just so you can see what a Generation and Sindt whistle looks like, looky here and listen up lad. :poke:
Check the two tracks under Archives then Recordings

Ytliek,
I own Generations, I have seen photos of Sindt whistles, but never have held or played one. How cool is it that Noreen and fiddle great Frankie Gavin are siblings. The gift of fine musicianship was certainly bestowed on that family.

The only reason I mentioned Gens is the pics show Noreen playing them too.

Someone put up a B Sindt on piping forum

Someone should buy that B whistle. It’s a bargain.

For those of you who don’t know, John uses standard off the shelf sizes for the brass tubing in his whistles. He just shaves a tiny peel off the last inch or so on end that goes into the head to make a tight pressure fit. You could probably do it with sandpaper. In fact IIRC there is a thread on here somewhere about someone who used a Gen tube which he sanded to fit his Sindt head.

I own two Sindt’s in D (one brass tube, one silver tube), B, Bb, C and A. I didn’t like the lack of a cross fingered Cnat at first so I made a tube out of standard hobby shop brass tubing, at John’s suggestion, and it played great. Then he made a silver tube for me so I bought a used Sindt off this list and now I have two really nice instruments. Then I learned to half-hole and let go of any issues with the cross fingered Cnat.

Three years later I went back to John for a C whistle but the wait had grown to a year so I decided to just buy some standard tubing again and made a C tube for the B head, which is larger than John normally uses for his C whistle, but it is the same head as his Bb. It made for a rocket ship C let me tell you.

So someone should buy this B and get some tubing. You can have a nice B, Bb and C whistle with a small drill press and some light file work. I’d be surprised if you couldn’t make a passable A out of it too.

BTW, my silver tube D is the best high D I’ve ever played and that is a long list of whistles my friends. If the house was on fire, I’d grab my wife, my Sindt high D, my cat and my dog, in that order.

It’s worth the wait. But you don’t need to wait for this B.

That would be Bloomfield and Raindog:

And Bloomie’s linked article (below the pic) is still available on his site.

If I wanted a MUTT I’d go to the dog pound!

Ah yes, take a masterpiece apart. What does that say to one’s consideration for the master craftsman John Sindt? Often imitated, never duplicated. If you could, ya would.

To do this speaks volumes about one’s own sense of craftsmanship and respect for the whistlemakers.

No thanks, I’ll wait for the real thing.

ytliek, if that is intended to be an insult I’ll just let it lie out of ignorance.

FWIW, it was John himself who suggested that I do that and gave me the instruction on how to do it.

So if the master suggests it, grasshopper, who am I to argue?

ecohawk, no insult intended. I don’t know circumstances with you and the master craftsman. However, either it is or it iSindt, just saying

Isn’t it a bit odd the forum has this obsession with whistles that have to be tweaked to be playable while in this case doing just that gets your knickers all in a twist?

The thing with Sindt whistles and particularly the D is that they are tuned very rigorously to an equal tempered scale. That doesn’t suit everybody’s ear and, again in the case of the D, the voicing of the F hole that follows from the scale has a strong effect on the fingering of the C natural. Again something that doesn’t suit everybody (and let’s face it, it’s a pretty idiosyncratic set up. Anyone who is a bit of a whistleplayer can work around it handy enough but while some whistles manage a perfectly in tune and clear toned C natural when played cross fingered. The Sindt D is not one of them). So what to do? Yes, use a tube designed to give the result you’re looking for. Why fault that?

Umm, this is marginally ridiculous. And I can tell you you’re taking a great deal more umbrage about this than John would. Plus, many people have been know to put Sindt heads on other whistle bodies- like John himself for starters…
