Has anybody used this this tunebook for whistle (esp. D or low D)?

Yes, I’ve taken quite a few tunes from the book. There’s obviously some that don’t fit on the whistle but there’s still loads that do fit and quite a few that I play on smallpipes.
There’s a couple of cd’s that use music from the collection, personally I prefer The Captain’s Collection.

The dense florid style of the text of that book is amazing.

How often do you encounter words like “peregrination”?

[Thread Revival]

Sorry to resurrect the thread but I was searching for the Simon Fraser Collection I am not turning up much. The book lined to in the first post is unavailable and the URL for the ABC version gives a 404.

I’m hoping someone downloaded the ABC file and can share it.

(my dropbox). I think this is clear of any copyright issues, but was done by Hans Bracker in 2002. If Hans is offended I hope He’ll contact me and I’ll immediately remove this link. This may or may not be the Chambers link I referred to above. I’m not sure where that went. This collection is 170 tunes.

Funny you mention Hans because I clicked on a link in a different thread which went to Hans’ site but unfortunately the simon fraser collection wasn’t there. So I thought that was weird. But I couldn’t resist listening to Hans’ sound samples for his low whistles. They sound wonderful.

Thanks for sharing the ABC, I really appreciate it.

I removed the file years ago because of copyright concerns.
Some copies remained in some other places on the public web for some time longer.

I can’t help with abc downloads but printed copies are still available and book 2 has been scanned and put onto a cd-rom in pdf format.

I have a copy of Hans Bracker’s version.

The ABC transcription is copyrighted to Hans. Nobody else has any intellectual property rights to it - Fraser’s copyright expired 70 years after he died, i.e. in 1922.

It’s up to Hans what happens to his ABC file.

I’m not very fond of the collection and only use it as a last resort. Fraser’s violin-salon-showpiece editing is ridiculous and his annotations are usually blustering romanticized lunacy.

I am happy to post files of abc tune collections privately, by email.
But they should not be available on a site for public download.
As I said, I have concerns about the copyright of individual transcriptions, and that’s why I withdrew files from my site. Apart from that there are errors in the abcs.

I do agree with Jack though on the general suitability/unsuitabilty of the Fraser collection.
