Tony, Is their any reason as to why your selling this set (just curiouse)? Your more likely to get a sail in OZ if your make the price AU$ 3 500. As that’s the price their going for (second hand).
By the way, I’ve got my Lancewood set running beutifully. It’s Identicle to the above but only with a Cn key and the normal curved basse drone. This is an excellent deal if you live in America and have the better exchange rate (than Australia).
Lots of e-mails and questions this morning…
That’s $3,600US
Yes, it’s my favorite set. I sold 2 others and kept this one. It’s rare because Ian no longer makes straight bass drones. The drones were purchased from one of his customers. These are same drones that were pictured on the Simack website. Does, this raise the price? NO, it just makes conversation. I was told Dicky Deegan had reeded the drones and them played them a bit. I waited 2+ years for Ian to complete the regulators for this set.
Mackenzie isn’t making sets like this anymore… he’s gone back to more expensive ones. Although it isn’t fancy, the workmanship on the set is great. $3,600US is about what it would cost to replace if he were still making this style. We’ve traded e-mails and he confirmed what the charges were back when I bought. Check current prices on makers in North America… a full set with 4 key wooden top chanter goes for more than $5,000. I’m guessing O’Grady sets go for under $4,000US but don’t have the flair, playability and workmanship as Mackenzie.
Why am I selling?
I’ve lost hearing in my left ear Monday, just after doing morning exercises. I spent the day in the emergency room where they determined there’s an infection in my inner ear causing vertigo and extreme nausea. I’m not allowed to drive and I can’t work for 2 weeks or so. I flipped jobs earlier this year and have used up my savings. The pipes have to go.
I must say that I was quite surprised to see this set up for sale. Isn’t this your favorite set?
I am sorry to hear about your hearing loss, and I can relate. Many years playing rock-n-roll has left me with 80% hearing loss in my left ear. I hope things clear up for you soon.
This is really sad news Tony. I can only imagine the disapointment you are feeling. You should have no trouble selling that set. What a great deal. And thanks for all the “protect your ears” warnings over the years. Hopefully, medical science will make some outstanding discoveries in the future that helps restore hearing loss.
A few thoughts to what happened to my hearing:
I’ve been taking antibiotics this past week for an ear, nose & throat infection.
While attending my nephew’s college graduation ceremony Saturday, some moron directly behind me started blowing a boating horn – the kind they use at football games and outdoor events. It happened very quickly and I covered my ear but it may have been enough trauma to cause or contribute to my condition.
All these remarks about beating and/or commencing legal action against the man with the boathorn are very much in the nature of personal attacks. As such, I think they should be edited and this thread locked immediately.
Tony, sorry to hear this. I know the position you’re in and it hurts.
Seth, I have another Mackenzie D chanter in a practice set. It’s not as fancy as the one I’m offering in the sale, but plays the same. I also have two Gallagher chanters, one in C and the other in B that I’m hoping I can hold on to.
For anyone who is interested in buying Tony’s set, I offer this testimonial. In recent years I purchased 2 chanters second hand from Tony. Both were exactly as described, fair priced, well packed and promptly shipped. Expect a smooth transaction. If this was a nice flat set, I’d jump on it.

These suggestions of ‘personal attacks’, sound to me like ‘personal attacks’, and so therefore I will (without any further ado) lock, edit and delete my mind…
