silver set

I know this is a stupid question, but it has been bugging me for a while: what exactly is the Felix Doran “silver set” ? A set of pipes completly in silver? Wouldn’t that be heavy as hell?
thanks, Jack

‘yes’ on both questions, though he later went back to a wooden chanter.

I heard the regs are just “silver-mantled” and are said to be nearly unplayable. Could somebody please give us information?
Best,
Hans

Dave WIlliams’ article in the piobaire covered it fairly well.

This is off course second hand info, I haven’t played the set myself, but Alphie came over to play at my wedding some years ago, and the set sounded fine - regs and all. And it was not that heavy. It is made from wood enclosed in metal - not solid metal.

But as I understand it, Felix had another set made, after selling most of the Rowsome set to Tom Mulligan - the set Alphie now plays? By someone in Manchester?

Yes Felix Groker made a new stock and regs for Felix. Felix only sold the Rowsome stock and regulators to Tom Mulligan. It’s all documented on Neillidh Mulligan’s site as to how Tom got hold of the drones & a chanter, I believe John Clark made a baritone drone and another Rowsome chanter was found to make the set into a full set once again.
