What do you guys (and girls) think of the dplus silkstone ace whistle ($360.00 or so) Has anyone played this whistle?
The only Silkstone i’ve played is the aluminum one, but the only with 6 holes, and i can say it’s one of the best whistles i’ve played. It’s very well made (best tuning slide i’ve seen), very dependable and loud enough.
We’re all waiting for a review of the Ace. I have Silkstone alloy D and D+. I like the sound of the D a little better, but I love the versatility of the D+. There are tunes (Morgan Magan and Beauty in Tears, e. g.) that can’t be played authentically on a standard D whistle but don’t sound right or are out of the range of a low-G. I do wish the alloy had the additional joint that the Ace has, 'cause the pinky hole is just a little in the wrong place.
I don’t think that the amount Paul Heyward charges for his whistles is out of line; as with any other whistles, you either like them or you don’t. But his are really high quality, unique, and he obviously puts a lot of work into them. I’m a little baffled that no chiffer has bit on the Ace, but I must admit that I don’t want to be the first either.
At $360 the waiting time should be short.
