Shutting down the bass drone

My Bb set has a straight bass drone end piece, which as you’d imagine you need arms like a howler monkey to reach. It has to be straight, by the way, the double bass regulator would get in the way of a turnaround end piece. Probably not a factor for most of yas! My solution to this dilemma was to make a wire deal’em widger that would put a pad (beeswax wrapped in plumber’s tape in this case) in front of the exit to shut it off. It worked but looked rather chintzy, not that I cared, but still…
Last week I was cleaning my pipes, for the first time since I got them 2 1/2 years ago - see what I mean about not caring? - and took the gadget off, today I was playing them again, and it occured to me to put some cloth - spare bag cover in this case - on the floor, and then jam the end of the bass into the cloth when I wanted to shut the bass off. Voila! Works like a charm.
I remember Robbie Hannon taking the end of his Coyne bass drone off whenever he wanted to shut it down. Someone get that guy a doo rag! Tshirt! Or the like!
