A bright blue ball…

Just a typical all-American family whose newspaper was the Daily Forverts, who had framed portraits of Eugene Debs and John III Sobieski on the dining room wall, and had Farrell Dobbs sleep on the couch on at least two occasions.

(If MT responds to this in Yiddish I’m really going to start to wonder if there’s a language he doesn’t speak.)

My Dad was a Teamster, Grandpap was an early member of the UMW and Slovak was spoken a lot in our home. Famous people never slept on our couch but John L. Lewis was spoken of during arguments. So other than that and we’re Catholic and lived rurally, I’m guessing not much was different.

I’m not sure Farrell Dobbs qualifies as famous, at least not in the Brad Pitt sense of the word. When I mention his name these days the three most common responses are, "Wasn’t he:

  1. a cowboy actor?
  2. a Country and Western singer?
  3. the head of the Mouseketeers?"

My wife’s family didn’t keep any pictures of their Great-Grandpa Sobieski on the walls of their house.
