my fingers are a little on the short side, and when i play lower whisles i have trouble reaching the bottom hole, any suggestions?
Me too. Use the piper grip and keep practicing, there aren’t any shortcuts I’m afraid. Also get whistles with a short reach - overall I’ve found Goldie Overtons to be some of the easiest out there.
Loren
I’m afraid Loren’s right, it just takes a lot of practice.
I only have an 8cm 3-finger spread and I have one of the old style Overton’s with the big holes and longer finger stretch.
Play your low D every day… preferably for an hour or more.
Also do finger stretching exercises whenever you get a free minute or two… it does wonders to increase your reach and dexterity.
Doing Mr. Spock’s “live long and prosper” gesture repeatedly really helps develop your ring fingers, which are the troublesome ones.
Just don’t blame me if your ears grow pointed and you start seeking the logic in everything! ![]()

I use my pinkie/little finger to reach it.
